Where to Pre: Kingston’s Best Pre-Game Spots

Before the night officially starts, there’s always one question: where are we pre-ing? Whether it’s to warm up for Stages, Ale, or Trin, the pre sets the vibe (and sometimes more fun than the night out itself…). If you’re looking for places with cheap drinks, good music, and just the right amount of fun before the night starts, here are some Kingston go-tos that never miss.

Tommy’s Diner

Tommy’s is one of those places that works for literally any part of the night. It’s a ’50s-inspired diner that plays some great throwback tracks and is great for photos. Their 3-for-$15 shooter deal is perfect for getting the night going, and if you’re already a little hungry, the menu has all the comfort food you could need before heading downtown. Plus, you could always stop by after your night out for a late night treat. It’s casual, fun, and close enough to everything that you can finish your drinks and walk straight to the bars– no Uber required.

Royal Tavern

Royal Tavern is a smaller, tucked-away spot that somehow always ends up being a good time. Between the cheap drinks, free pool, and karaoke nights, it’s the kind of place where “just one round” usually turns into three. The crowd’s a mix of students and locals, the music’s always solid, and the laid-back vibe makes it an easy place to spend the first half of your night (or accidentally stay all night). Plus, they also have a 3-for-$15 shooter deal that is sure to start your night off right.

The Night Owl

If you’re starting your night near Trin or Ale, The Night Owl is always a solid move. It has a very chill but student-heavy vibe that makes it feel like the night’s already started before you’ve even left the table. The drinks are reasonably priced, the music’s upbeat, and it’s the kind of spot where you’ll probably run into half your lecture. They also frequently have trivia nights where you can win Trin lineskips! Whether you’re sitting by the bar or crammed into a booth with friends, it’s an easy place to get in the mood for the night ahead.

💡 Out & About Tip:
Tommy’s and Royal both start filling up around 9:30 p.m., especially on Thursdays and Saturdays. Get there early, grab your shooters, and you’ll have time for pool, photos, and maybe even a karaoke song before heading out.
