Skip the Vic Pit: Things to Do at Night (First-year Edition)

If you’re a first-year in Kingston, you’ve probably already heard of (or survived) a Vic Pit. And look, we get it. You’re new, you’re excited, and you want to meet people. Maybe you went once. Maybe you promised yourself you’d never go again. Either way, you deserve more options than a sweaty residence mosh pit.

And no shame. We’ve all been there.

But here’s our curated list of things we actually recommend doing at night in Kingston - fun, safe, and zero risk of getting in trouble.

Get a Tarot Card Reading

Ugh the best vibes ever.
This one’s a bit harder because you kinda have to ask around and find someone, but I remember doing this in first year at like… Leggett Hall? It was honestly so cute and fun. Just a bunch of girlies in a room and hearing about my love fate?? yes please.

Highly recommend.

Sports Night With Your Buddies

I miss the Blue Jays watch parties.
But you can totally still do this. Basketball, volleyball, hockey… whatever. A bunch of pubs show games and it’s actually a cute little night plan. Most of them run in the evenings (I think… I don’t watch too much sports lol). But Blue Jays forever.

Musiikki (we are obsessed)

Okay if you know us, you know this is our entire personality at this point.

Musiikki is a bit more of a walk from campus but seriously… trust us.
You go from freezing outside to this warm, cozy cabin energy and it just hits every time.

We went recently and they told us the space is welcoming to everyone. And honestly, we can confirm. If you scroll to the bottom of our blog, you can find the link to the interview we did with their server and media manager. Love the place so much!

Trivia Nights

If you’ve read any of our other posts you know we love a little trivia night.

The new Queen’s Pub has been doing some, and Miss Bao too. There’s honestly always a trivia night happening somewhere. Check our Instagram because we try to update you guys on weekly events.

Bubble Tea Night Walks

Elite first-year plan.

Grab bubble tea from Chatime, Gong Cha, or Presotea. Our personal fav is Presotea but Chatime is always reliable and they usually have discount vouchers flying around campus.

Then walk to insomnia cookie for the best combination. The warm cookies with fresh bubble tea. Chefs kiss.

The Screening Room for Indie Movie Nights

Did someone say A24?

This is for the very local, very niche, very mysterious (but not performative people). Or honestly just anyone who wants a calm night with a film you can pretend is your new favourite.

Hope this gave you some more ideas and fun places to go! If you want to keep up to date with all the fun events you can do - follow us on our tiktok and Instagram @outandaboutkingston and keep checking our blog for more :)

Until next time,

Chanelle, Sophie, Jenn :)
